Department Head & Master Class Piano Teacher

Mr. Wong Chee Yean

Chee Yean has performed as pianist and harpsichordist in the chamber music series of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra on several occasions over the past years. His solo recital programs include some of the challenging Romantic repertoire such as the Liszt B minor Sonata, the Chopin B minor Sonata and the Schumann Fantasy op.17. He recently completed his graduate studies as a piano performance major at Indiana University, Bloomington in the USA. His teacher at the university, Emile Naoumoff, himself a student of Nadia Boulanger, has had an enormous influence on his performing skills as well as his musical aesthetics.

Although he has never been trained as a composer and has only taken up composition seriously two years ago, he is one of the six composers selected for the Composer Forum 2009 of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra has already premiered a composition of his in June 2009; another composition will be premiered in February 2010. This new endeavour has also resulted in a publication of one his pieces in Germany by Floricor Edition in its 2010 catalogue.

As a teacher, Chee Yean has taught at various levels ranging from kids at private music school to adults at universities. He has prepared university students for their recitals. Two of his students have won scholarships to study at a music specialist school in the U.K. Wells Cathedral School.
